Funnel Ball asked:

Playground equipment are a wonderful way of making your kid exercise and work off all the extra energy. But, we should always keep in mind that playground equipment safety is essential for any pearent, teacher or someone supervising the kids.

There are several things included in playground safety. The first one is to have good playground safety rules made for kids, so that they don’t misuse the equipment that might cause danger. The next thing to consider is to inspect the playground equipment to make sure that it is safe. The authority must properly supervise the equipment to ensure that they meet the laid playgrounds safety rules. It is always better that adults set playground safety rules themselves and make children know the importance of following the set regulations.

Another area, which we usually take for granted is inspection of equipment for safety. You must check the playground slides and other equipment yourself, find out if good strong chains are used, railings are firmly intact and the steps are solid. Always buy equipment that are professionally certified for their playground safety methods.

There are two types of playground equipment – Outdoor and indoor ones. Indoor playground equipment are mostly meant for usage in homes, while the outdoor playground equipment are installed in parks, relaxation clubs, schools and day care centers.

There are few things to be kept into consideration while installing an outdoor playground equipment. Figure out if there is enough space to install the equipment. The shape and size of the equipment. You should always check the surface where the equipment is being installed for its safe and resilient features. There are many other things like obstruction from trees, fences and sidewalks to be considered while fitting an outdoor playground equipment.

When we talk about equipment, it is better to check if your child has suitable age to play with the equipment or if it is risky and unsafe. It is good to check that there is no rope dangling or an object protruding, which might be a cause of strangulation or can make your child fall. The signs of a high quality outdoor playground equipment are its easy maintenance and environment friendly features. The equipment should be durable enough to bear harsh weather conditions.

While buying a playground equipment, confirm its manufacturer’s commitment to safety and whether the equipment has been tested for load bearing features or not. Find out if your seller has done the durability test on its equipment, that too in compliance to laid industry standards.

These days manufacturers offer custom designed playground to suit your needs, age group and budget requirements. You can get details about the varieties available at their stores via internet. It will help you in comparing prices and locating the best equipment to meet your desired safety and budget expectations.

Playground equipment at an apartment complex?

OneCrazyMommy asked:

I am not sure where to post this question, so I will try here.
I want to ask the apartment owner about replacing the swingset/slide playground equipment. The current one is old, rotting, has rusty nails coming out of it and is not safe. I (along with all the other parents) would use the area if it were replaced with a safer set.
*How do I go about presenting this idea to the owner?
*If he is not willing to replace it are there any sort of grants. (We live in San Diego County)
*If there are no grants I was thinking about asking the other residents to pitch in a few bucks (there are 40+ units in this complex)

Any ideas on how to do this successfully?

I am thinking about presenting this with the following points:
It will make the apartments more desirable.
Less liability as far as the current playground goes.

Also where can I go online to get some prices and some ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Are there any daycare owners on here?

dreamee asked:

I’m planning to open a daycare in August 2010. I’m thinking about buying a house in a commercial area. I want to start by having no more than 25 children from the ages of 6 wks-18 months. I think it would be cheaper since I wouldn’t have to worry about so many toilets per child, food, playground equipment, field trips, etc. I would like to expand maybe after three years to include older children. Do anyone think this is a good way to start?

Andrew Beene asked:

Many people including myself strongly believe that play time is integral for the primary formation of the skills and attitudes as well as cognitive development during the formative years of a child or a toddler. If you study nature closely, you will find that most if not all mammal neonates and developing young develop and reinforce their skills and techniques for later use in life during playtime with a sibling or a similarly aged peer in an animal group or collection.

I remember playing in residential playground equipment as a child myself during my early years and in retrospect, I have noticed events in the playground and my reactions to different specific situations remain consistent all throughout my life growing as a teenager and then finally as an adult. For example, playing in some playground equipment when I was about 6 years old, I got into an altercation with some other kids that I have never met before. Because of the reinforcement of values and attitudes that I got from my parents, I acted in a relatively civilized manner and let them have a go at the swing set accessories without protest even though I felt at the time that it was not fair that they should interrupt my turn at the swing set equipment and with the fact that they did not exactly ask nicely. While some might observe that the course of action that I took was more subordinate and cowardly, which also carries a bit of truth to it, I defend my actions with the explanation that I did what I did because this is what I thought was right at the time. More interestingly, this event established my reactions in similar altercations and disputes further in my life. To put it simply, that one day playing in some playground accessories set the precedent for my actions as I grew older.

In hindsight, I have observed that once you reach adulthood, your mental faculties are developed enough that you learn to control you impulses and emotions or at least keep them in check and sometimes the precedent you have set for yourself during your formative years can be overturned and replaced with new values and attitudes later learned in life. That is to say that these events and the attitudes they establish in an individual through stimulus whether they be positive or negative in their formative years are not permanent although they do set a precedent that one eventually follows for a long time. These established notions can be changed through experiencing different scenarios and reacting differently or in some cases, by sheer force of will. As we go on in the different paths in our lives, it helps to get closure on negative moments and put these behind us so that we can function more fully in our current situations as adults.

Daniel Manson asked:

My neighborhood is one of those that the news channels like to feature when they’re talking about the collapse of real estate and the way foreclosures are gutting a city. We’ve had long time residents forced to move out of our neighborhood. Having to stare at the boarded up windows and read about our street being an example of the Great Recession in newspapers and magazines began to get very depressing. When several vacant houses were bulldozed and the empty plots of land put up for sale, a group of my neighbors got together and do you know what we came up with? Investing in playground equipment, buying the properties and creating a small park for the local kids. How’s that for taking back our sense of community pride?

Buying the land was the easy part. Who in their right mind would want to buy two vacant lots in the middle of an urban neighborhood that’s apparently dying? Zoning wasn’t an issue. When our councilor heard that we planned to erect playground equipment and establish a park, he fast tracked the paperwork. It’s not often he’s able to present positive news to the media, and pictures of happy kids climbing over a metal swing set would be a nice change of pace from the eviction notices and houses with the plumbing and wiring stripped out. We began to receive unsolicited donations from the public, people who were convinced that providing a safe outlet for outdoor recreation would not only help to keep our kids healthy and safe, but would foster our sense of community. The only bump we ran into was trying to find a store to actually buy the playground equipment from. The wooden play fort kits and backyard rated metal swing set being sold at the big box stores wouldn’t stand up to the punishment a whole neighborhood full of kids can inflict and besides, we wanted a full range of structures.

We were pointed to American Swing Products Inc., and this quickly solved our problem. The company’s web site included a catalog offering every piece of playground equipment we could possibly have thought of (and many we didn’t even imagine existed), including slides, swings, various structures, spring ride toys and even products that are accessible to handicapped children. Just in time for the summer, the properties were graded, re-sodded and the first piece of playground equipment was installed: the metal swing set that became the photo op showing how our community was bouncing back from the housing crisis and leading the way toward recovery.
