How can I keep cats away from my kids outdoor play area?

We have new playground equipment which includes a sand filled area that cannot be covered. I need a long term, kid safe solution that will keep the cats from doing what cats do in the sand. Any ideas?
Neighborhood cats invade my yard. I wouldn’t own a cat, but if I did, I certainly wouldn’t let it roam.
